One of those days when the hours between 8.30 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. drag... Realised i haven't been updating the blog diligently as i should. well, yesterday sent Shuling off to UIUC. She was sad expectedly, but i'm sure with the number of friends she'll meet over there, she'll be happier once she gets there. isn't it weird? it's always sadder when you are leaving. but when you are on the plane, you can't help feeling excited about the new life abroad, the new people you gonna meet, the lack of parents, the freedom, etc etc... WOW. i can only begin to describe the feeling of liberation. it's just....liberating. For once, you are responsible for yourself, you take charge of your life, no one is there to decide for you. its EMPOWERING you know, if there's such a word.
In this conservative asian society we live in, we are usually sheltered from the world from protective parents who really just have our best interests in mind. but it's a tad stifling to be still holding on to mum's apron strings at >21 years old. yet it's both impractical and unrealistic to move away from your parents (although i must say the temptation is really prevalent) given the cost of renting and buying a house. No subsidised housing is available for the single and young people of this nation you know? in any case, how far can you run? 24km max!
Anyway, so going overseas, even for a holiday is a reprieve away from home. from a father who imposes unreasonable curfews definitely. any normal young adult needs some nights out a month you know? no need to kick up a fuss. this is a safe country. may all parents learn to give their kids some slack. cheers.
