London - Part 1 - FOOD

London - my second home.

It's without a doubt I love this place. I spent but 3 summers there, but it was enough for me to keep wanting to return. This time, we were going to spend 10 days! Imagine the things we did, the sights we saw and the FOOD..... salivate.

It used to be that Chinese restaurants dominated the Chinatown at Leicester Square. Nope! the Korean Wave has hit London's Chinatown too. Surprise Surprise. Though the waiters/waitresses looked in no way similar to Bae Yong Jun, Kwon Sang Woo nor Song Hae Gyo, the food was fairly authentic. [ps: best korean food is still found on 32nd/33rd st Manhattan NYC.] We went to Little Korea [Liko] 3 times! This is of course my favourite man acting goofy at Liko munching on seasoned cucumbers and sprouts. who would imagine cucumbers could taste so good. we chowed down 2 plates of this. [Manhattan rest would have provided unlimited supply, here, we could only have 2.]

Whilst shopping along Carnaby St, we found a little purple Thai bistro called Mangosteen that served lunch at less than 7 pounds. such a little gem. And may I add, the thai iced tea was made just like those served in bangkok no less. sorry gulped, slurped and gobbled everything down too fast to take pics. anyway it's on Ganton St and the restaurant is purple, how can you miss it?

Here's me grinning away at Ten Ten Tei along Brewer St. I went there 3 times in total, 2x for lunch and 1x for dinner. It's my favourite Japanese restaurant. Nothing beats it for value and quality. I had fresh tuna sashimi over rice with grated yam.

We went to Hampton Court in Surrey to look at the court of the famous Tudor monarch - Henry VIII. [Have you seen The Tudors? and The Other Boleyn Girl? The fascination with this guy never ends does it?] Was stupefied to find really affordable munchies at the cafe within the grounds. Can you imagine? These Britons didn't try to "ketok" us just because we were tourists k? A hot meal under 8 pounds! Unbelievable! Here is a shot of Carmen, my partner in crime with her lunch and a close up of my hot latte. it was pretty cold in London, so stops for hot coffee were necessary every few hours just to get some warmth.

Here's a snap of a very simple sandwich [free range egg mayo] and coffee at the cafe in Leeds Castle. It was a cold breezy day in Kent [more later] so again, coffee was essential to bring warmth to the gullet. [do i sound medieval?]

This is Hao-e acting all flash light in the face at Belgo Centraal. Throughout the trip, he has been acting overawed by the sheer compactness of the city and marvelling at the myriad of restaurants with every cuisine imaginable. The pot of mussels kept him happy. You would too if seafood is to your taste! The atmosphere is really relaxed here and the waiting staff wearing monk-like garbs is really quirky. He of course had to goof while drinking beer too, look at his little finger, the wanker.

This last photo is one taken at Gold Mine at Bayswater. It has been said that the best roast duck in the whole of England can be found in this little area near Hyde Park. It used to be found at four seasons. Now the best roast duck has emigrated to Gold Mine, a few doors down the lane. Why? cos the chefs of four seasons left to open Gold Mine lor!

And there were Fish and Chips at Golden Hind that Mel brought me to which i again forgot to take pics of, cos we were too busy catching up. Oh, not forgetting the really cool 5 course meal that teck, kelvin, yueling and sandy brought us to near Bank. it would have been embarassing taking photos there in the restaurant, a bit atas but really YUMMY! ahh.... thinking of them all still make me salivate. i'm definitely gonna go back for more...

Back To Reality

It's over! We're finally married (in the eyes of the Church!). It was really pretty fun last sat, thank God for the sunny weather (a bit hot lah, but at least it didn't rain till after), for the wonderful guests and my fantastic friends. hope it wasn't too uncomfortable under the sun for everyone.

Back Safe and Sound

This is my first post since we left Bermuda for Singapore more than 3 weeks ago. We are battling serious jet lag this time. it might be the age-factor (yikes!) or because we didn't rest properly on the flights (yes plural!) back cos we were busy trying to exhaust all the new movies on krisworld, or maybe a combination of both lah. but both of us have been trying very hard to keep awake at 3pm. yes, the sleep monster strikes at that hour! thank God we are going to remove time saving tonight, so we have 1 less hour to correct this weekend. talking about movies, twilight was amazingly easy on the eye! although i hesitate to call ourselves twilight converts given that i was highly skeptical at first. but the eye candy in the form of Rob Pattersin/Edward Cullen is really irresistible (did you know Rob Pattersin was Cedric in Harry Potter??) .... argh. i wanna get bitten by this vamp too lor! BITE ME! Hao-e even bought New Moon (the sequal) to read this weekend and i spent almost ...

IT JUST DOESN'T FEEL LIKE CHINESE NEW YEAR!

As I learn about everyone's plans to welcome the Golden Tiger Year, the more unhappy I become.  Although it was a conscious effort on our part to avoid being home for the Lunar New Year, I cannot help but feel left out during this all-important holiday. On this island, we have all but 1 so-called Chinese restaurant.  Every year, they would put up the red banner a few weeks before CNY. One red banner compared to the numerous ones back home.  How pathetic eh? There is no atmosphere whatsoever. With the "influx" of Chinese kids, 4 in total plus 1 soon-to-be-born, I made myself pack some red envelopes from home, so that the kids can experience a little of the festivities that I am so used to.   WHAT IS CHINESE NEW YEAR WITHOUT THE RED PACKETS? This year, we've upgraded our celebration to include mahjong!  yes, the mahjong set and table arrived last weekend.  hao-e couldn't stop himself from ripping the plastic cover off those ivory -coloured tiles and we ...
