belated new year greetings to one and all! wishing everyone the best of health during 2009!
slowly but surely, i've found that new years don't mean as much anymore. i don't know whether it is because there isn't much "atmosphere" here in bermuda, or because i'm just don't have the company here, or because i'm getting old. maybe all three. i have heard of so many people travelling to the east coast of US, some even to NYC, and not want to "drop by" and visit. i give up trying to invite/cajole/coerce/blackmail people to come. honestly, when my own family doesn't want to make the trip, how to force others right? but seriously, i do feel a bit disappointed no one has come to visit us after almost 21 months. how bad is a 2hour flight from new york?
that took care of the whining bits of this piece. i was actually going to blog about something that suddenly dawned on me while i was driving the other evening. how do i know i've been here for too long?

- you don't bat an eyelid at other motorists' obvious stupidity but instead start anticipating how stupid they can be
- you don't complain that the service is poor, mail doesn't arrive, there's no shopping anymore
- you pay the 25% duty included in everything you buy and not whine about it
- you adeptly cut off the price tags of everything you've bought in boston/nyc so you don't have to declare and pay duties at the airport
- you start planning holidays for every quarter to get off the island at the beginning of the year
- you start worrying that you've become a hermit because you don't need to meet or talk to people to survive, internet tv works fine
- when you call your best friend and realise the awkwardness in the tone of the conversation
definitely looking forward to returning next month. at least to see how everyone's doing and make sure everything's fine.
wp - be strong and hopeful, you're in my prayers.
